Charles W. Tobias (1920-1996) was a Hungarian American chemical engineer best known for his foundational work in batteries and professor emeritus of the Chemical Engineering Department at UC Berkeley. He began his career at UC Berkeley in 1947 as an instructor and eventually became the chair of the department (1962-1972). He also worked as an investigator and faculty member at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (1954-1995). The winner of numerous awards in his field, Tobias is often referred to as "the father of electrochemical engineering." Tobias was also an accomplished musician.
